Driving Across the Border from San Diego and Southern California

If you are driving from San Diego, just take I-5 South or I-805 South all the way to the San Ysidro Port of Entry. From downtown San Diego, the trip will usually take 20-30 minutes, but checking the Border Wait Times website can help travelers plan their crossings to avoid peak traffic times.

Take into consideration that drivers must carry a valid driver's license to operate a vehicle in Mexico, and licenses from all 50 U.S. states are accepted.

If you are coming from LA or other parts of SoCal, drive south on I-5 or I-405 and then take I-5 or I-805 to the San Ysidro border. The best times to cross the border into the U.S. are early in the morning or late at night to avoid long wait times. The total driving time from LA will be around 2.5 to 3 hours.

A temporary vehicle importation permit (TIP) is only required if traveling outside of the free zone in Mexico.

Where to Park Near the Border

A lot of our patients prefer to park on the US side of the border and walk into Tijuana, rather than driving into a foreign country.

If you want to walk across the border, there are three pedestrian points where visitors can cross the border from San Diego County into Tijuana: PedEast, Otay Mesa, and the Cross Border Express. The best and easiest way to do it is to use the PedEast pedestrian San Ysidro crossing Port of Entry. Signs usually give a pretty clear idea of where pedestrians need to go, and the whole process is pretty straightforward even for first-timers.

Travelers must stop at the immigration office at the border to obtain their FMM tourist card, as it is their responsibility to do so. Once you're through Mexican Customs and have crossed into Tijuana, you'll come out near the border area.

From there, you can either get picked up by our driver at a designated spot or grab an Uber or taxi and head directly to our clinic in Zona Río.

From the airport, it's about a 20-30 minute drive to the border, depending on traffic, by taxi, Uber, or shuttle.

Alternatively, you can fly directly to Tijuana. The Cross Border Xpress (CBX) connects the Tijuana International Airport with its terminal in San Diego. This bridge allows travelers to avoid long lines at the border.

From TIJ, it usually takes about 15-25 minutes to get to Zona Río, depending on the traffic.
