What's the deal with Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are basically a leftover from when early humans needed extra chewing power for tough foods like roots and raw meat. But as diets changed and our jaws became smaller, there stopped being enough room for those extra molars. That’s why wisdom teeth now often come through impacted or at awkward angles, which can lead to pain, swelling, infection and problems with nearby teeth, making removal a pretty common recommendation.
Common Problems Caused by Wisdom Teeth
When wisdom teeth don’t grow properly, they can cause all sorts of issues with your oral health. Some of the most common problems include:
Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Wisdom teeth that get stuck in the gum tissue or against other teeth can be really uncomfortable and increase the risk of infection, cysts and even bone loss, which in more severe cases could affect future treatments like a dental implant.
Crowding: As wisdom teeth push through, they can nudge the teeth next to them out of line and even change your tooth’s shape, undoing all the good work you had done on orthodontic work.
Infections: Wisdom teeth that are only partly erupted create gaps in the gums where bacteria can sneak in and cause all sorts of problems: severe tooth decay, painful infections, swelling and abscesses.
Tooth Decay: Wisdom teeth are hard to keep clean because they’re hidden away at the back of the mouth – so they’re a bit prone to cavities.
Gum Disease: Because it’s so hard to keep the area around your wisdom teeth clean, you can get gum inflammation or periodontal disease.
If you leave these issues untreated, they can escalate and start to affect more than just your oral health.
When is it Time to Get Dental Extractions for your Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth don’t always need to be taken out, especially if they’re healthy, in the right place and not causing any problems. However, most dentists will recommend extraction to avoid further complications if any of the following conditions apply:
Pain or Discomfort: If you’re getting a lot of pain in the back of your mouth, it’s usually a sign that your wisdom teeth are causing trouble.
Damage to Nearby Teeth: If your wisdom teeth are crowding or shifting the teeth next to them, it’s time to get them out.
Frequent Infections: If you’re getting recurring infections or swelling around your wisdom teeth, it’s probably time to get them removed.
Impaction: If a wisdom tooth is stuck in the jawbone or gum line, it needs to come out – otherwise it can lead to bigger problems.
Orthodontic Treatment: If you’ve had cosmetic dentistry work done, you might need to get your wisdom teeth removed to keep your teeth in line.
The earlier you get your wisdom teeth out, the better – it’s always easier to recover and heal when you’re younger.
The Wisdom Teeth Removal Process at ODS Dental Clinic
We take patient comfort and safety at affordable prices super seriously at Olive Dental Solutions. Here’s what you can expect from the whole process:
1. Consultation and Examination
First, you’ll come in for a consultation and a good, long look at your wisdom teeth. Our skilled dentists will take X-rays or 3-D scans to see exactly where they are and if a simple or surgical extraction is necessary in case that the molar is not easily accessible. We’ll explain the whole dental procedure to you, and answer any questions you’ve got.
2. Anesthesia Options
We’ve got all sorts of ways to make the process as pain-free as possible – from local anesthesia and IV sedation to general anaesthetic if it’s really necessary. We’ll work with you to find the best option for your case and your level of comfort.
3. Extraction Procedure
For wisdom teeth that are poking out a bit, a simple extraction is all you need – we just loosen the tooth and pull it out with some special tools. In case of impacted teeth we might need to make a small incision in the gums, and remove a bit of bone to gain access to get them out. But don’t worry, we’re pros at this.
4. Post‑Operative Care
After the procedure we’ll give you all the advice you need to look after the extraction site, manage any discomfort and get back to normal as quickly as possible – usually within a few days. It takes a few weeks for everything to fully heal, though.
Benefits of Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth do not always need to be removed, especially if they come through healthy, fully erupted and properly aligned. But when they become impacted, overcrowded or start causing problems to adjacent teeth, extraction is often recommended.
Removing troublesome wisdom teeth can help prevent pain, infection and damage to nearby teeth while also making it easier to keep your mouth clean and reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease.
It can also relieve the pressure, swelling and discomfort that wisdom teeth often cause when they start coming through.
Wisdom Teeth Removal Recovery Time and Aftercare Tips
Looking after yourself after a wisdom teeth removal is super important to make sure you heal nice and quick. Here are some tips to help you get back to normal faster:
After your extraction it’s pretty normal to deal with a bit of soreness and swelling for the first couple of days, so pain meds and an ice pack on the outside of your cheek can help keep things manageable.
It’s also a good idea to stick to softer foods like yogurt, soup or mashed potatoes while the area settles down and avoid anything too crunchy, spicy or hard that could irritate the site.
Keeping your mouth clean matters too, so gentle warm saltwater rinses can help, just avoid brushing directly over the extraction area for the first 24 hours.
Try to stay away from straws and smoking as well since both can dislodge the blood clot and increase the risk of dry socket. And of course, don’t skip your follow up appointments as they help make sure everything is healing the way it should.

I had 2 crowns and a root canal done at Olive Dental Solution a week ago. The entire process took about 3 days, and cost a third what it was going to cost where I live in Northern Michigan. They were quick to respond, I got an appt in just a couple weeks, and they did everything they could to make the whole process as smooth as possible. I am very happy with my results, and would not hesitate to use them again!Posted on Google![]()

Unfortunately, I had a really disappointing experience at Olive Dental and would not recommend them. We drove all the way from Orange County specifically for our appointments, and they took us about an hour late with no real apology. When I brought up the delay, I was simply told that medical appointments can run long depending on treatments. I completely understand being 10–15 minutes behind, but an entire hour feels like a scheduling issue, especially when patients have other appointments and plans. Because they were running so far behind, I actually had to skip my own treatment entirely because we had another appointment at 1:15 and no longer had enough time. Only my husband got the treatment. On top of that, I was quoted $50 for a teeth cleaning over the phone, and that was also the price advertised on their website. Once we arrived, they tried to charge me $100 instead. After a lot of unnecessary back-and-forth, they finally agreed to honor the $50 price that had originally been quoted and advertised. The front desk experience made everything worse. The woman we dealt with was rude, had a bad attitude, and showed very little concern about the fact that we had already been waiting an hour. I’ve been to other dental offices in Tijuana and have had much better experiences. I honestly wish I had waited for one of my previous offices to have an opening instead of coming here. Between the hour-long delay, the attempted price change, poor communication, and rude customer service, this was a horrible experience. I’m genuinely surprised by all of the five-star reviews because our experience was nowhere close to five stars. Definitely would not return or recommend.Posted on Google![]()

I drove down from San Diego to get all four of my wisdom teeth removed at Olive Dental Solution and I’m so glad I did. The team explained every step, made sure I was comfortable, and the whole procedure was much easier than I expected. My recovery was smooth, the clinic was spotless, and I paid a fraction of what I was quoted in the US.

I was very anxious about wisdom tooth surgery because of a bad experience in the past. The dentist at Olive Dental Solution took extra time to answer my questions and used gentle anesthesia so I didn’t feel pain, just some pressure. They followed up with me on WhatsApp during the first days of recovery and the swelling went down quickly. I highly recommend them if you’re nervous about getting your wisdom teeth removed.
From Los Angeles, CA
I traveled from Arizona to Tijuana for wisdom teeth removal after comparing prices and reviews online. The Olive Dental Solution staff helped me plan everything around my short trip, from X-rays to the extractions in one visit. My jaw was sore for a couple of days, but I had no complications and was back to work the following week. Great bilingual team, modern clinic, and excellent value for the quality of care.
